Rosie the Nurse Socks to Benefit Health Care Workers & Patients
BELLINGHAM, Wash. (Oct. 21, 2020) — How do you thank a health care worker when words just can’t express your gratitude? ModSocks sells a sock for that, and is giving all profits to charity.
The Bellingham, Wash. sock brand designed Rosie the Nurse socks with a reimagined Rosie the Riveter who wears scrubs and a face mask instead of denim coveralls. The style is available featuring Rosies with two different skin tones, and also in a knee-high version where both Rosies work together. They are offered in two sizes to fit most adults, and sold through retail partners nationwide including online at ModSock.
ModSocks said the idea for the socks came out of a desire to recognize the tireless efforts of health care workers during the COVID-19 pandemic while helping to create lasting health care equity.
“This pandemic has exposed the huge gaps in our health care system when it comes to treating people in marginalized communities,” said Urania Shaklee, ModSocks owner and designer of Rosie the Nurse socks. “Our socks are a way to thank health care workers while recognizing that the intense challenges they face could be reduced if there was more equitable access to health care.”

The brand has pledged to donate all profits from the new Rosie the Nurse socks to Planned Parenthood because of the organization’s commitment to improving care for underserved populations.
“MBPP believes that Every Body Deserves Care, no matter who they love, or how much they earn,” said Executive Director Linda McCarthy of local affiliate Mt. Baker Planned Parenthood. “Everyone is welcome to use our service at any time. Our medical staff care for each person as we would for our own family members. No matter what race, creed, religion, income or sexual orientation, ALL are welcome at Planned Parenthood.”
Access to care for people from impoverished and rural communities isn’t just less — sometimes it is nonexistent. Planned Parenthood is the largest provider of reproductive health care in America, with more than 600 active health centers operating in the United States. They provide low to no-cost cancer screenings, STI testing and treatment, contraception, abortion services and sexual health education to more than 5 million people each year.
More than 75% of Planned Parenthood clients have incomes at or below 150% of the federal poverty level, making them one of the biggest health care providers for low-income people.
Planned Parenthood is also the beneficiary of ModSocks’ 2017 line of Nasty Rosie the Riveter socks reimagining Rosie as a “nasty woman.” ModSocks has donated nearly $40,000 to the Mt. Baker Planned Parenthood affiliate through the sale of Nasty Rosie socks so far.
